Prof. Dr. José Ramón Ruisánchez Serra

José Ramón Ruisánchez Serra is asscoiate professor of Theory and Latin American Literature in the Department of Hispanic Studies at the University of Houton.

Among his latest publications are, La reconciliación: Roberto Bolaño y la literatura de amistad en América Latina (UNAM, 2018), A Bibliography of Spanish American Poetry of the 19th Century and Modernism (Oxford, 2020) and Torres, an autobiographical aesthetic education (ERA, 2021). He has contributed the Mexican poetry section of the Handbook of Latin American (University of Texas Press-Library of Congress) for the last eight years.

He has co-edited with Ignacio Sánchez Prado and Anna M. Nogar A History of Mexican Literature (2016), A History of Mexican Poetry (2021) and A History of the Mexican Novel (2022), all published by Cambridge University Press.

This article explores the travel writing of Amado Nervo in El éxodo y las flores del camino, the 1902 volume that colects the sketches of a 1900 trip to the World Fair in Paris, both in prose and in verse. In my reading I privilege the “absengtial”: instead of the tourist magnets, the way that they let down Nervo, and the way he writes about it with peculiar sincerity. This sincere articulation of sadness and disappoinment at what he only dreamed of in his native Mexico, allow him to produce not only one of the important books of the genre during the Belle Époque, but also to powerfully write about the space alotted to a Latin American artist in the world.

En este artículo se explora la literatura de viaje que El éxodo y las flores del camino (1902) practicó Amado Nervo. El libro colecciona los apuntes del viaje de 1900, cuya meta formal era la Exposición Mundial en París, y que combina textos en prosa y en verso. En este tratamiento, se privilegia la “ausencial”: esto es, no los lugares típicos y llamativos, sino la decepción que le causan al cronista. Mediante la articulación sincera de lo ausencial Nervo logra no solamente escribir uno de los libros de viaje más intersantes del cambio de siglo, sino esbozar el estatuto del artista latinoamericano en ese momento.
