Full Professor at Heinrich Heine University of Düsseldorf.

Head of department of Romance  Languages and Literatures I (Romance literature and cultural studies in Spanish, French and Italian).

Vittoria Borsò began her academic career at the University of Mannheim, where she obtained her doctorate in Romance philology with a study about metaphors in the novels of Honoré de Balzac and Émile Zola (Metapher: Erfahrungs- und Erkenntnismittel. Jahrhunderts, 1985), which was honoured with summa cum laude. In 1991 she achieved habilitation at the same university with a critical study about magic realism in Spanish America in the context of Mexican culture and literature (Mexiko jenseits der Einsamkeit. Versuch einer interkulturellen Analyse – Kritischer Rückblick auf die Diskurse des Magischen Realismus, 1994).

Concepts of in-between were established as a tool against the ontology of separations and against the logic of identity and difference, eradicating the consistency of binary classifications. The following article relates the different concepts to two paradigms: the geopolitical, whose objective is the aggression of Western thought as imperialist thought, and the aesthetic-political paradigm in which politics is questioned from aesthetics that dispenses with geopolitical locations. This second paradigm entails a meta-criticism with respect to the organization of space and the linguistic device that produces it. Although Latin America fulfills the conditions of a critical thought that –from the beginning– is based on an entre-lugar, nevertheless, on both sides of the ocean there is both the closing of borders and an identity logic as well as the porosity of confines open to their own otherness –a condition conducive to the formation of an entre-lugar. Mexico obviously offers transcendent examples of a hybrid culture in which entre-lugares flourish. Based on the above observations, a topological reading of Mexican texts on pachucos and cholos is attempted. The way of approaching these border characters produces different organizations of space and suggests different concepts of entre-lugares according to a geopolitical logic (Octavio Paz) or based on an aesthetics of relationship and transformation (Carlos Monsiváis). The different conception of entre-lugares is, therefore, due to a different epistemological positioning that organizes writing in different ways.
