The Department of Spanish & Portuguese at UC Irvine and UC-Mexicanistas announce the twenty-fourth annual Mexican Studies Conference to be held on April 26-28, 2018. This conference brings together academics from Mexico, the U.S., and other parts of the world who are conducting research on related themes.

Keynote Speaker: Mario Bellatin, author of Salón de belleza, Shiki Nagaoka: Una nariz de ficción, Perros heroes and Jacobo el mutante, amongst numerous other works.

At a time when many conversations on Mexican public life focus on forms of political and social violence, representations of the body often depict it as a receptor or propagator of violence. “The Body at its Limits” will provide a forum to address such current representations of the body, while also discussing the various complex, nuanced and perhaps even contradictory ways bodies are represented in Mexican literature, visual cultures, and the arts. We encourage submissions from across disciplines, including but not limited to: literary, visual, media and performance studies, as well as religious studies, history, anthropology, political and social sciences. We are particularly, but not exclusively, interested in papers that address the following themes:
