Through their differing exploration of Mexican cultural heritage onscreen, both animations serve contrasting ideological functions that contribute to larger cultural discourse about the relationship between Mexico and the US. <em>The Book of Life <\/em>was released two years prior to the controversial presidential campaign of Donald Trump and offers a typical depiction of Mexico as an exotic other. In contrast, <em>Coco, <\/em>a film produced during the time of the election and released in the US eleven months after Trump\u2019s inauguration, has been described as subversive filmmaking due to its detailed and positive representation of Mexican cultural heritage in a climate of increasing political antagonism towards the country (del Barco 2017). This article explores how these respective cultural depictions of Mexican heritage relate to the industrial structures that produced them as well as the differing socio-political climates in which they were produced and released. <\/span><\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/tab][tab icon_family=&#8221;none&#8221; title=&#8221;Resumen&#8221; id=&#8221;1580125134518-1a63f-62d4&#8243; tab_id=&#8221;1591811809146-1&#8243;][vc_column_text]\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #b0b0b0;\">En la \u00faltima d\u00e9cada, no solo uno sino dos largometrajes de animaci\u00f3n que centran en el d\u00eda de los muertos de M\u00e9xico han sido producidos por estudios de Hollywood &#8211; <em>The Book of Life <\/em>(2014) de Reel FX Creative Studios y <em>Coco<\/em> (2017) de Disney Pixar. A trav\u00e9s de su exploraci\u00f3n diferente del patrimonio cultural mexicano en pantalla, ambas animaciones cumplen funciones ideol\u00f3gicas contrastantes que contribuyen a un discurso cultural m\u00e1s amplio sobre la relaci\u00f3n entre M\u00e9xico y los Estados Unidos. <em>The Book of Life<\/em> se lanz\u00f3 dos a\u00f1os antes de la campa\u00f1a electoral controversial de Donald Trump, la que normaliz\u00f3 la r\u00e9torica xen\u00f3foba, particularmente hacia los mexicanos y otros inmigrantes que cruzan la frontera entre M\u00e9xico y Estados Unidos. La pel\u00edcula ofrece una representaci\u00f3n t\u00edpica de M\u00e9xico como otro ex\u00f3tico.
